Great roll with the Dough yesterday, and the Challenge is in full swing. Hybl is beaming with pride!
We had an excellent contingent of ciclistas for our first group attack on a few of Inigo's Dripping Springs segments. Who was there? RyRob, Tyler (aka TinkerBell?), Ullrich, Hood, Yeti (who hosted the roll), Scheibs, Stanton, VJ and I all met at Yeti's Serengeti outpost. Thx MC for the hospitality. By the way, it takes MC 33 minutes to get there from his casa, and at last check he does it every day. This time tested commuter's time eliminates claims of excessive commuting demands for all but the octogenarian set.
Back to the recap. Everyone on the ride is a Strava-ite, and registered for the Winter Fitness Challenge. Our As advertised, our course traversed the Trautwein Loop, starting at around 8am yesterday. Huge winds from the South promised an excellent back half of the ride, but we had to pay for it at the outset. Rain threatened to fall the entire stretch, but it was Big Hat NO Cattle in that department.
For those that have not been on this ride, it takes you down Bell Springs to 290, then on a bit of the Livestrong course, over to 12, then through Driftwood, Skirting Belterra to 290, then a most excellent sprinter stretch on Trautwein to Fitzhugh, then back home. True Hill Country beauty out there. amongst the chip seal and barbed wire.
We took a pretty steady pace, with the exceptions of two of Inigo's segs (Bell Springs Hills and Trautwein Descent). We did another segment (Livestrong Rollers) at a very manageable effort, with everyone sticking together over the course of that 17 minute set of climbs.
Ride Notes:
1. Hoodie climbs like a Wookie at lightspeed.
On the Bell Springs climb, I promised myself I would not push it. Greyhounds are not very self aware. I couldn't resist the call of the chase. First Tylerbell attacked, then Stanton. I got sucked into the chase. Hoodie was in hot pursuit, inhaling oxygen (and exhaling CO2) at a pace that was likely registered on some global warming sensors over at The University.
2. Stanton clears his throat when he is unleashing the fury.
Every time Stanton inflicts the pain, his signature "ahem" signals your impending beating.
3. Ullrich felt his oats on Sawyer Ranch
Sawyer Ranch is a great stretch of pavement. Slight uphill, buttery road. Saturday also delivered a tailwind that ignited the German's mojo. He tore off a major chunk, and pulled Tyler, Scheibs, MC and Stanton down the road on the Ullrich Express. Once the diesel gets rollin', best get out the way.
4. Ryan has True Grit
Two punctures in his return to the Pelo, a course that included around 2,500 feet of climbing, and a vampire headwind could have ground him to a nubbin. But he hung tough and finished the ride. Well done bro, and great to have you back in the pack!
5. Deer are very athletic
Witnessed a deer jump two fences that had to be five feet. He shaved a little belly fur on the last jump, but gets a 9.9 from this judge.
6. Tyler likes bells
Every mile of the ride was proclaimed by the ringing of Tyler's Garmin 405. Hello nickname.
POST RIDE NOTES
Hoodie laid out an excellent spread for the postride order party. His better half (marathon queen Toni) baked some excellent pumpkin bread and peanut butter muffins, totally negating the caloric burn of my ride. Yeti brewed up some ridiculous java, and we tested the tensile strength of the Hincapie gear. Here is my take on sizing. Everything but the vest (which is rockin' awesome) fits pretty true to size. I am going a size smaller on the vest, but I like it tight. (please hold double entendres until the end of the discourse). I must say that Hoodie has taken our gear to a new level. Well done Big Ticket! We will be ordering socks as well, so let him know if you are interested.
Things for this upcoming week:
1. I plan on riding 50+ miles per day from 11/23 to 11/27. Let me know if you are around and interested in a long, slow roll on any of those days.
2. I will be doing these rides as part of the Rapha Turkey Burn Challenge on Strava. It's free to enter, so check it out!
3. If I don't see you, have a great Thanksgiving!
